Williams Goodgame Workday

We are in the process of

rescheduling this workday,

please check back for more information.

The Chilton Cemetery Association will hold a workday at the Williams Goodgame Cemetery. This historic cemetery in Jumbo has been heavily vandalized.

We need a volunteer with a pick up truck with a trailer hitch, and we also need water to mix up concrete. If you can help with either of those needs please contact Katherine at 294-2197.

If you want to volunteer but can't do physical labor, we need people to man "jigsaw puzzle" tables. At this cemetery the vandals broke the headstones up into st size pieces. If you can't participate please consider a monetary donation towards the work.

Directions: From I-65 travel north up Highway 145 about eight miles and turn right onto County Road 61. Go one half mile, the cemetery is on a slight rise on the right .

The Williams Goodgame Cemetery is a historic cemetery in the Jumbo community of northeast Chilton County. Thomas H. Williams buried here was the first Sheriff of Chilton County, back when it was Baker County. Thomas Williams was also a Lt. in the Confederate States Army. Other veterans in this cemetery are Edward Willis, also in the CSA, and John Crockett Goodgame who served in the Alabama militia during the late Creek war of 1836.

The images below show how this cemetery has been vandalized, please help us restore this cemetery by volunteering your time. Please contact us at

Obadiah Moore Cemetery Dedication

Heavy rains earlier in the week created enough damage to close one of the roads that visitors needed to take to get to the cemetery. Plus, the county had to come in and dump some gravel on the dirt road that leads directly to the cemetery. Despite all that, and the forecast of more heavy thunderstorms to come, there was a good turnout of visitors to the Moore Cemetery Dedication.

The new historical marker was also unveiled at the cemetery. It reads:

This cemetery is the final resting place for thirty-seven members of the Moore family. John Moore, son of American Revolutionary War Patriot and Battle of Charleston POW, Obadiah Moore, purchased this land on September 4, 1834. The Moore family migrated from Princess Anne County, Virginia to Pitt County, North Carolina, and then to Columbia and Jasper Counties in Georgia where they lived about 30 years before settling in the Chestnut Creek area of Autauga County in 1819. These early settlers served their community as ministers, postmasters, and a justice of the peace.

Obadiah Moore is buried here along with Civil War veterans Moses Moore and Hansford Chitty who both served with the CSA 59th Alabama Infantry.

Listed in the Alabama Historic Cemetery Register.
Marker erected in 2009 by the Descendants of Obadiah Moore Nonprofit.

There was a good turnout especially considering the weather and the road closings.

Sitting was restricted inside the cemetery itself due to the limited area. There are about 40 graves in this cemetery, most unmarked.

Unknown Ferrell Daughter - Mullins Cemetery

In an article written by Sarah Madge Mullins and presented to the Chilton County Historical Society, we learned that the rock pile behind the graves of James and Mary Ford Mullins covers the body of the daughter of Mary Mullins and Dr. Alfred Ferrell. Dr. Ferrell was home on leave from his services as a surgeon in the Confederate army when his daughter died. He was too distraught to bury her so he laid her on the ground and piled the rocks up around her.

A descendant of Dr and Mrs. Ferrell donated the funds for one of our $50 headstones and we've placed it on her grave.
